John A. Walsh

Artist’s Mission

John A. Walsh

The group of handsome devils your looking at have been playing music together in some configuration or another for well over 30 years.  The Mid-Ohio Valley has long been known as a hot-bed of unusually talented musicians; these boys are a potent combination of that legacy.  All but one of these gents hail from Marietta, Ohio...the epicenter of this rare deposit of Appalachian artistry.  Nestled in southeastern Ohio at the border of north-central West Virginia along the mighty Ohio River, Marietta is the home-base for The Fossils.

The Fossils are: Bill White/Keyboards; David Tenney/Bass, Guitar, Vocals; Dave Laing/Percussion; John A. Walsh/Vocals, Guitar, Mandolin; Jeff George/Lead Guitar; Andrew Colvin/Drums & Triangle; and David S. George (studio member)/Guitar, Keys, Bass, Engineer

Way back in 1977, John & Jeff - then both in junior high school - started their first band together with Jeff’s brother David and drummer, Dave Zide.  They named their band Scenario and they cut their collective teeth on the popular music of the day.  Music by the likes of The Eagles, BTO, Foghat, Bad Company, Santana, and The Doobie Brothers.  Scenario was also writing its own original music, even at its members’ young ages.  Between 1977 and 1982 a tremendous amount of musical skills were forged in George’s basement.  Meanwhile, Andrew Colvin was in diapers.

Bill White has been playing in bands since the 1960’s all over the world.  Bill is a Viet Nam veteran (USMC) and managed to join a band and entertain his comrades in the theatre of operations.  Bill & John first began playing together back in the early 80’s.  Dave Laing has been playing almost as long as Bill.  He has been in numerous notable area bands over the years.  Dave is a master percussionist/drummer and is regarded as “Chief Embellisher” of The Fossils.  Andrew Colvin, the Fossil with the lowest Carbon Date, is the band’s drummer.  Above all, he understands what playing “in the pocket” is all about.  Andrew did his first gigs with the WVU Mountaineer Marching Band in Morgantown, WV.  David Tenney is a gifted multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, piano) and vocalist.  Tenney earned his stripes in the 1980’s when hair-bands roamed the earth.

In 2006, John brought Bill and Andrew together (along with Todd Burge, the favorite son of WV singer/songwriters) to put together a concert for the Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series at the Washington State Community College.  Embracing a philosophy of “less is more” and playing a mix of both original and cover tunes, The Fossils were born.  Laing & Tenney had been playing with Walsh in the Free Spirit Band and subsequently joined The Fossils.  Jeff George, who had been writing & recording with John in the studio band George’s Attic since 1996, stepped in to put the cherry-on-top as The Fossils’ electrifying lead guitarist.

The sextet is focused on delivering unique & tasty original music along with gems from the Classic Rock era in their now legendary live performances.  The Fossils mission: Completely satisfy the listeners with top-of-the-line musical performance and have extreme fun doing so.  It’s all about the love and enjoyment of great music!
